Shane Carruth, USA 2013. 96mins. Certificate 12A

This month we’ve teamed up with Science Fiction Theatre to bring you one of the best sci-fi films from recent years — Shane Carruth’s long-awaited second feature, exploring the connection between nature and the human psyche.

Where: Golden Lion, 116 Sydenham Road
When: 7.30pm Thursday 29 January 2015
Tickets: £4.50 in advance; £5 on the door; FREE to members!

Nearly ten years after his low-budget debutPrimer won acclaim from critics across the spectrum — not to mention the coveted Grand Jury prize at Sundance — writer/director Shane Carruth follows up with this beautifully experimental modern-day fable.

When a man and a woman unwittingly ingest a mind-altering drug they become strangely drawn together. Starring the director himself alongside the much celebrated Amy Seimetz the two try to piece together the fragments of their broken lives as dreams and reality become increasingly blurred.

Love sci-fi? This is the screening for you! Think you hate it? Come along and let us change your mind. New year, new you!

★★★★★ ‘Baffling, intoxicating, elegant, Shane Carruth’s long-overdue follow-up to Primer is among the year’s best.’ Adam Lee Davies, LITTLE WHITE LIES

★★★★★’The most visually imaginative American film since David Lynch’s Eraserhead.’ Trevor Johnston, TIME OUT

★★★★ ‘A perfectly judged, beautifully striking film… A true original.’ Kim Newman, EMPIRE

★★★★ ‘My immediate desire when it ended was to stay in my seat and watch it all the way through again.’ David Gritten, THE TELEGRAPH

‘Clearly, the film is intended as a tactile experience of poetic ideas, of modern disconnection and biophysical insecurity and existential doubt, and the clarity of these anxieties is bruising and stunning.’ Michael Atkinson, SIGHT AND SOUND FILM OF THE WEEK
