Fragments from a century of cinema @ Sydenham Arts Festival
This year for the first time we’ve teamed up with the friendly folk at Sydenham Arts Festival, to bring you a series of six films from across the century since the First World War. Highlights include free screenings and workshops, post-film discussions, and meatballs!

All Quiet on the Western Front

A special screening in the imposing surroundings of Sydenham’s German Church, to mark the centenary of WWI. Adapted from Remarque’s classic novel, this early Hollywood epic production tells the story of a group of German schoolboys who are persuaded to enlist for the “Great War” by their nationalist teacher.

Come and enjoy the beautiful but bitter story of Norma Desmond, a forgotten Hollywood actress who doesn’t believe that her glory days or the power she once exerted over her fans and acolytes is over. The film includes stunning sets and costumes, but is Norma really ready for her close-up?
Disney’s Lady and the Tramp

Enjoy this Disney classic with the family in the welcoming setting of Sydenham’s own fine Italian restaurant, Trattoria Raffaele. Included in the price is some delicious Italian cuisine, the perfect accompaniment to that iconic meatball date scene!
Film Workshop for 12-19 year olds
- When: 12-6 Sunday 13 July

An all-day free film event for peopled aged 12-19, featuring hands-on workshops by professional filmmakers, an introduction to ‘reading’ and understanding films, and a chance to learn about film programming. A surprise screening will conclude the event, selected by participants in the programming workshop.
Hour of the Wolf

This award-winning film (Palme d’Or, BAFTA) from director Chen Kaige follows the lives of two childhood friends and stars of the Beijing Opera as they are torn apart by politics and unrequited love. One of Empire magazine’s Top 100 Best Films of World Cinema, this film is a must-see.

A screening of this heart-warming yet hard-hitting drama filmed locally on a tight budget, followed by a Q & A session with Director Jamie Thraves (tbc). It is a tender treatment of mental illness and the camaraderie of the two lead characters is truly touching.
